Resizing a window in Unity/Ubuntu 12.04 is quite a pain as one needs to target the 1 pixel border of the lower right corner. Fortunately the width can be increased:Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xmland increase the widths, i.e.: Log out and in again.
Noteworthy as Unity's turn away from the desktop towards the launcher might be, I'm an old dog and like my screen crowded. The (manual) way to create a new desktop shortcut icon to an application is to create a shortcut file in the Desktop directory, i.e:/home/george/Desktop/Firefox8.desktopAnd the contents:[Desktop Entry]Encoding=UTF-8Version=1.0Name=Firefox 8.0.1Comment=Firefox 8 for GWTType=ApplicationExec=/home/george/bin/firefox-8.0.1/firefox -P gwtIcon=/home/george/bin/firefox-8.0.1/chrome/icons/default/default48.png
